Awarded at the last festival in Berlin a black comedy directed by cult Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki ("Leningrad Cowboys", "Man Without a Past"). A masterful film in which one can see (and laugh at) contemporary Europe.
After the success of the "Le Havre Man" in France, full of references to the thirties and thirties, the Finnish master decided to return to his homeland. In this year's Berlinale "On the Other Side" he told the story of a Helsinki resident who decides to change his life and open a restaurant. One day Wikström accidentally encounters a Syrian refugee - Khaled. Although the relationship between men begins to be unfortunate, the heroes quickly establish a deep bond that will be exposed to many hard trials. Is it only in the fable that their unexpected meeting would be the beginning of a beautiful friendship?
In the latest film Kaurismäki does not remain deaf in echoes of the wave of xenophobia and nationalism in the world (in one of the scenes Khaled talks about how he was beaten on the way to Finland by skinheads in Gdansk). The Finnish director, however, is able to break through a layer of sadness in order to offer viewers a dose of unbearable optimism and contagious sense of humor.
