Wojtek Smarzowski, the creator of the award-winning works: "Wołyń", "Pod Mocnym Aniołem", "Drogówka", "Róża", "Dom zły" and "Wesele", returns with a new film. "Kler" is a picture of a Catholic church as an institution viewed "from the sacristy's side", throwing light on topics that are uncomfortable, difficult, often concealed, but also moving. All this is shown through the prism of the fate of the three clergymen whose ups and downs prove that priests, just like the communities of the faithful, do nothing humanly alien. Arkadiusz Jakubik, Robert Więckiewicz, Jacek Braciak and - for the first time at Smarzowski - Janusz Gajos give a performance in the main roles. The excellent and full cast stars include Joanna Kulig, Katarzyna Herman, Rafał Mohr, Robert Wabich, Henryk Talar and Izabela Kuna.
A few years ago, the tragic events combined the fate of three Catholic priests. Now, on every anniversary of the catastrophe that they miraculously escaped with their lives, the clergy meet to celebrate the fact of their survival. Every day they arrange very differently. Lisowski (Jacek Braciak) is a curia worker in a big city and makes a career dreaming about the Vatican. The problem is that Archbishop Mordowicz (Janusz Gajos) is standing in his way, a luxurious dignitary who uses political influence to build the largest sanctuary in Poland ... The second of the priests - Trybus (Robert Więckiewicz), unlike Lisowski, is a rural pastor. Serving in a place full of poverty, he increasingly succumbs to human weaknesses. Kukule (Arkadiusz Jakubik) is also not very successful, who - despite his fervent faith - actually loses the trust of parishioners day by day. Soon, the stories of the three clergy will merge once again, and the events that will take place will have an impact on the life of each of them.
The aim of our film is not to discuss the faith or criticism of believers. We consider faith to be one of the most intimate spheres of every human being. However, we want to talk about human actions and attitudes that raise our fundamental opposition. Our film is an artistic vision based on many real events, situations that have occurred somewhere and sometime. It is an extremely moving, but at the same time true story.
We do not hide our fascination with the person of Pope Francis, so unlike the present-day, lost in the consumption of the world. Here is the Pope who, spacious and luxurious apartments in the Apostolic Palace, voluntarily exchanged for a modest apartment in the House of St. Marty. The reforms that he undertook are primarily aimed at building a completely missionary Church, understood as a community that will turn to the help of the lost and serve people all over the world. Franciszek is the pope who puts in the first place, not right, but pure mercy. According to him, the church should be poor, serve the poor, mourn those who nobody cries about. Francis criticizes materialism, but the clergymen pretend that they do not hear it. It was asking for a film reflection. How do ordinary, average priests find themselves in this situation? How do believers look at all this? To these questions, and a few others, we try to give an answer in our image - the creator of the film.
