"Lato" (summer Leto) is the latest film of one of the most acclaimed Russian film and theater directors, Kiryla Serebrennikowa. Inspired by real events, full of positive energy, the story of freedom and revolution, which is fired by rock.
Summer 1981. Leningrad lives on rock from Western-smuggled albums of David Bowie, Blondie, Lou Reed, T-Rex and Sex Pistols. Majk is a star of the underground music scene and the king of a rock club, where young people are ordered to listen to concerts sitting and in silence. You can go crazy only behind closed doors of the flat, during private performances. Wiktor is just beginning, he has talent, eye-catching beauty and he writes great lyrics. These two will combine not only love for music, but also for Natasha, the wise and beautiful wife of Majka. The fate of this triangle is the center of "Summer": black and white (with sudden bursts of colors) of a film about love and artistic flourishing. Kiryla Serebrennikov's film inspired authentic stories of the leaders of the Leningrad groups: Majka Naumenko (Zoopark) and Wiktor Coja (Kino).
"Lato" had its world premiere in the Main Competition of this year's IFF in Cannes. However, the director could not participate in it - during the film's execution he was detained by the Russian authorities and during a festival he was under house arrest during the festival. Despite the serious difficulties, the film was finished, but the political and widely reported in the media process against the director shook the whole world.
