Weary everyday Walter Vale (Richard Jenkins), university lecturer from Connecticut, in surprising circumstances meets his pair of young immigrants. Tarek (Haaz Sleiman) and his girlfriend Zainab (Danai Gurira) illegally renting his apartment in New York. Walter agrees, however, that the rest of his guests, until they find a new home.
So begins the knowledge that the professor mired in routine will become inspired to change their lives. For immigrant couple friends with Walter will be equally important effects.
