Teenage Lewis Barnavelt after his parents' death goes to a midwife in the eccentric uncle of Jonathan. Shortly after arriving, the boy discovers that his uncle practices various forms of magic and explores the dangerous areas of parallel worlds. All this to solve the mystery of Isaac Izard's missing master of black magic, who constructed a clock that measured time to the coming Apocalypse. The clock is hidden in the walls of a huge property, and its finding is the only way to stop the coming destruction.
